Figure 9.5 Density of seedlings, juvenile and trees of Soapberry across three years (1999–2002)

The density of seedlings was high indicating that regeneration is unlikely to have been hampered by extraction and that the regeneration potential appears good (Figure 9.6). The Basavanakadu sites had a high density of seedlings, saplings and adults, which could be due to the area being wetter, fertile and with an absence of weeds and fruit harvesting. Koliyal (1997) working in central Indian forests and Murali et al. (1996) and Uma Shankar et al. (1998) from BRT forests reported that the regeneration of NTFPs can be negatively affected by extraction. In the BRT forests, the past forest management practices such as felling timber trees, establishment of exotic tree plantations, and practising of shifting agriculture by the indigenous community have also had considerable impact on the forest structure. This resulted in the proliferation of invasive weeds such as Lantana camara and has substantial impact on the regeneration of tree species (Ganesan and Bawa unpubl. data).
